February 2012...Federal Government Puts an Early End to ecoENERGY Retrofit Program

Sadly the Federal Government has put an end to the ecoENERGY Retrofit program ahead of schedule. The program was closed to any new registrants on Sunday, January 29; two months ahead of the official end date of March 31, 2012. The $400-million ecoENERGY Retrofit program encouraged homeowners to retrofit older homes with more energy efficient upgrades. Canadians could receive as much as $5,000 to make eco-friendly updates to their homes.

It is expected that this cancellation will not only hurt homeowners but those in the retrofitting business and may result in consumers resorting to cheaper and less energy efficient solutions. Natural Resource Minister Joe Oliver sited “prudent management by our government” as the cause. Registered homeowners have until March 31, 2012 to complete retrofit renovations to their homes and can be eligible for post-retrofit evaluations and apply for grants until the June 30, 2012 deadline.
